Issue 87 of constructive journalism magazine, Positive News.
The lead article in this edition for Positive News explores the fact that of the 7,000 languages spoken across the world, 50% are expected to have vanished by 2100. One language dies every 14 days: our linguistic diversity is disappearing as we watch.
Inspired by the article, Studio Blackburn had the idea to take a meaningful, poignant word from an endangered/rare language and present it, alongside its translation, in a beautiful, impactful way.
The resulting illustrations are meticulously type set, celebrating language as the magazine’s primary medium , but also preserving the words and their symbolic significance for posterity. The aim is that by paying close attention to the design of language, and writing about its diversity, the illustrations give new meaning and value to this incredible richness and highlight the need to help preserve it.
